Beryllium Settlement
Beryllium settlements occur when the defendant in a Beryllium exposure lawsuit comes to a mutual agreement (the Beryllium settlement) with the plaintiff for a set amount of money. Defendants often try to reach a Beryllium settlement for a variety of reasons, and in most cases, both sides benefit from reaching Beryllium settlements, since settling out of court can save large amounts of money in legal fees.
Beryllium settlements may appeal to defendants trying to avoid the possibly negative publicity of a trial; a Beryllium settlement can also total much less than the amount named in the suit. Once reached, a Beryllium settlement is final: the plaintiff may not file suit against the defendant after agreeing to a Beryllium settlement-the agreement is legally binding for both sides and terminates the litigation.
Many plaintiffs find Beryllium settlements beneficial because they are frequently much less time-consuming than litigation. Plaintiffs who accept a Beryllium settlement may do so in part so that they can receive the funds from the Beryllium settlement in order to pay medical bills and secure the their families' futures.
Hanford Workers Receive $6 Million Award From Jury
A GROUP CALLED 'The Hanford Resource Center,' created under the Energy Employee Occupational Illness Compensation Act in July of 2001, helps workers file claims through the Department of Labor. So far they've paid out $6 million to Hanford workers and filed some 2,000 claims since starting in 2001. Hanford workers who have chronic beryllium disease receive a tax free lump sum of $150,000.

A directive for the departments to establish a permanent center in the Bay Area is included in an energy appropriations conference report, Tauscher's office said Monday. The legislation, which could be voted on next week, is sure to pass before Congress adjourns for the year. Under the program, employees or their survivors who developed cancers or such diseases as berylliosis, a serious respiratory ailment caused by exposure to beryllium, can receive up to $150,000 in compensation, along with payment for medical expenses. Without a permanent center, the 48,000 past and present nuclear weapons workers in the Bay Area had to rely on occasional visits from a traveling resource center to help them learn about and apply for benefits.
